The NFL career of Caleb Williams, the quarterback selected by the Chicago Bears with the first overall choice in 2024, has been fraught with difficulties thus far. The Bears let offensive coordinator Shane Waldron go in the midst of a three-game losing run, but NFL rumors are swirling like never before, according to Albert Breer, who says the Bears’ facility is fuming ahead of Week 11’s game against the Packers.

“There is, without a doubt, a great deal of frustration,” Breer stated. “I believe that Caleb Williams’ lack of preparedness at the start of the season is a major contributing factor,” the coach said.

Williams, on the other hand, was supposedly among the NFL’s most promising quarterback prospects since Trevor Lawrence and Andrew Luck. Williams’ three years of college throwing for over 10,000 yards and ninety-three touchdowns led many to believe he was a more promising prospect than either Luck or Lawrence.

The former first-round pick’s first nine NFL starts, meanwhile, haven’t gone so swimmingly.

With 1,785 yards passing, nine touchdowns, and five interceptions, Williams has guided the Bears to a 4-5 record in his starting quarterback role. But among the more concerning statistics are the 38 sacks he has recorded in nine starts. With 35 sacks, Williams is second in the league, behind only C.J. Stroud of the Texans.

Even more so, with Bears head coach Matt Eberflus under fire, speculation has been rampant about what the team can do to save its season. Following his midseason collapse, the Bears are reportedly considering benching Caleb Williams.

Rumor has it that the Bears may bench Williams in favor of backup quarterback Tyson Bagent if he continues to struggle in his first season with the NFL.

Following four seasons with the Shepherd Rams, Bagent was undrafted despite throwing for over 17,000 yards, 159 touchdowns, and 48 interceptions on 69% of his attempts. In 2021, he also won the Harlon Hill Trophy, which is seen by some as the DII equivalent of the Heisman.

Given the Bears’ dismal season, it’s reasonable to assume that these are all baseless reports. The rumors spread rapidly when teams are in disarray. According to Breer, the squad will be working together, as a unit, under new offensive coordinator Thomas Brown, with the hopes of ending the disarray surrounding the offense.

Thomas Brown prioritized holding complete unit meetings instead of dividing into position groups, according to Breer. This was one of the first things Brown did in the past few days. “We are crossing our fingers that he can unite the group in their pursuit of solutions.”

It seems like everything that could go wrong is going wrong for this once-promising squad in Halas Hall this 2024 season. Williams and the Bears’ offence may now have what it took to fulfill their full potential with Brown’s newfound mastery of the attack.
