Smokey Legend Returns: Former Star QB For The Indianapolis Colts Peyton Manning Rejoins Team As…..Read more
On Sunday, the Indianapolis Colts suffered a humiliating 24-6 home loss to the Detroit Lions because they were clearly outmatched. Every game left on the schedule for the Colts is now a must-win, and they are presently 5-7.
In the loss, quarterback Anthony Richardson had another dismal performance, throwing for 172 yards on 11-of-28 passing and 61 yards on 10-carry attempts. Even though the rookie quarterback had a bad day in terms of completion % and yards per attempt, he still received decent grades from Pro Football Focus.
Richardson has the fifth-best passing grade of any NFL quarterback in Week 12 according to Pro Football Focus. In fact, he has only gotten a higher passing grade in a single game once before, in Week 11’s matchup with the New York Jets, at 77.9. Richardson had been heavily criticised by PFF for his bad performances in the past, but this game was seen as a significant exception by the site.

What gave rise to such a good mark despite the dismal statistics? Even if a pass is removed from the stat sheet as a result of a penalty, PFF’s grading method still applies because all plays are evaluated within the context of the game. The penalties in this game severely impacted Richardson’s stats, as he lost five completions for 79 yards.
Of Richardson’s passes that were considered for this game, five were marked as dropped, swatted at the line of scrimmage or throwaways. Richardson would have had at least 51 more throwing yards and a touchdown if he hadn’t made those two drops. Despite having the eighth-fastest completion percentage among NFL starting quarterbacks, he was pressured at a 46% pace in this game.
Last week, the Colts’ tight end room was ranked among the worst in the NFL, while guards Dalton Tucker and Quenton Nelson were among the worst in pass blocking. It appeared that the pass receiver, rather than the quarterback, was the intended beneficiary of a couple of Richardson’s incomplete passes intended for the tight ends.
Even though PFF is usually hard on Richardson when he has a poor statistical performance, Sunday’s Colts supporting cast was so bad that they could see what was occurring. After finishing 10 of 16 throws for 163 yards against a top-tier pass defence, Richardson was named the NFL’s top passer when not penalised. No matter what they did, the Colts just couldn’t stop him from scoring.
In week 12, Anthony Richardson was pressed on more over 46% of his pass attempts, while having the eighth-fastest NFL passing time.
Dropped passes cost the Colts 51 yards and a touchdown, contributing to their 15% drop rate. Despite completing four passes, the team lost 79 yards due to penalties.
On November 25, 2024, Zach Hicks tweeted: “Hey there!”
Even though Richardson still has a long way to go before he can play to the level the Colts expect from him, the product surrounding him was a disaster in the previous game. Even though he was up against a formidable Lions squad for the first three quarters, he was completely let down by his supporting cast. I know this has been mentioned before in reference to other games this season, but this one against the Lions was absolutely unbelievable.
From now on, the Colts must win every game. Hopefully, they got their poor luck out of the way last week. It would be very appreciated if they could resolve these difficulties.
