Apparently, the Bears didn’t learn their lesson from last year, when they had to recruit Darrynton Evans, a former Bear, since they ran out of offensively-savvy running backs four weeks into the season owing to injuries. Due to a severe shortage of running backs, they were forced to finish their victory over Washington by having fullback Khari Blasingame carry the ball.

They even cut ties with Blasingame, so he is no longer available as insurance in these kinds of scenarios. If they bring him back, maybe they won’t have to worry about center Doug Kramer running plays that should be handled by a real fullback.

The Bears are let down by this move from a different angle as well. A seventh-round pick is useless.

No seventh-round pick will have much of a shot at making the Bears’ roster if the organization continues to view itself as youthful, improving, and poised for a postseason run. With the exception of safety Elijah Hicks, their sole productive seventh-round pick in the past decade, you can get a backup safety almost anyplace in the draft or on waivers.

The fact that Herbert’s contract will be up in the air after this year is irrelevant. In comparison to a seventh-round pick, which is likely only useful for trading up in the draft to improve one’s position in Rounds 5-7, the insurance they would have had from having an additional running back on the roster for this season—one who was familiar with the offense—was significantly higher.

They must pray that their running backs are unharmed. At the present time, it is one of the few positions that has not been affected by injuries. Because of his injury history, they are not counting on Travis Homer to play third back. For the third time throughout his career, he spent time on IR this year.
