Michigan football beat USC 27-24 in one of the more exciting games I can remember in a long time. This game was the definition of a roller coaster of emotions.
Michigan football broke out to a 14-0 lead behind two long touchdown runs from Kalel Mullings and Donovan Edwards. Will Johnson added a pick-six for Michigan but USC fought back taking the lead late in the fourth quarter. Michigan then went on an 89-yard touchdown drive and punched in the game-winner with 37 seconds left. This game truly had a little bit of everything.
This win was crucial for the 2024 Michigan football season
There was a lot of national doubt about the Michigan program coming into this game. I do not think that doubt has been completely erased but it has definitely lessened.
The nation saw the true identity of who this team was with smashmouth ground and pound offense and tenacious defense. This is the identity of the best version this Michigan team has to offer. This win was so big because they now have everything still in front of them.
The difference between 2-2 and 3-1 with the remaining schedule is astronomical. They are firmly in the playoff picture and the Big Ten conference race. I believe this gritty win is also going to ignite this team and give them so much confidence moving forward.
The Wolverines were knocked down and showed they were capable of standing back up. These next two weeks are going to be huge for this team. If they can stack two wins vs Minnesota and Washington, they are going to be in great shape heading into the bye week.
This game will be remembered for years to come
I can not put my finger exactly on why it is but as I was watching this game, it gave me the exact same vibe as watching Michigan vs Penn State in 2005.
An afternoon kickoff as an underdog in the Big House and the game comes down to the very end with Michigan football making a huge play on offense to win the game.
That Penn State game is one that I so vividly remember watching and jumping up and down on my couch in my parents living room after they won. Saturday’s win is going to be one that I tell my kids about one day because it was that memorable.
What a special win for Sherrone Moore to put on his resume just four games into his coaching tenure. We are so fortunate we root for such a great program that plays on such a grand stage. Go Blue!
