The fact that Arkansas defensive tackle Eric Gregory has been around for six years is commendable in and of itself. That’s more time in charge of the Razorbacks than even Sam Pittman has had.

“It’s kind of a joke in the room,” stated Deke Adams, the defensive line coach for the Razorbacks, on Wednesday. Things like when Coach Pitt initially arrived here can come up.

“Raise your hand who was here when we first got here,” he ordered the men to raise their hands. [Gregory] is one of, at most, two or three people in the room who were present when [Pittman] initially arrived.

Adams is relieved to have him on board as they rebuild around Landon Jackson, who was named to the SEC all-conference preseason team. The grizzled old man in the room is now Gregory, who saw little action in his rookie season.

“He brings a lot of maturity to the room,” Adams remarked. Every position up front is known to him, so when the moment comes for him to speak up and command attention, he does it with ease.

He plays aggressively because he is aware of how good he is. In our room, everything that he brings has been fantastic.He is much too underappreciated. The work he performs is excellent.

That kind of thing doesn’t faze him because he’s a fairly modest child. He doesn’t even seem concerned; he doesn’t inquire about it. Every day, he shows up and puts forth a lot of effort.

Gregory has stuck around through injuries, changing coaches, and a constant turnover of teammates, at an era when players are eager to eject themselves from school. Going someplace else was never really an option for me.

No matter where I end up, my mentality is that I will maintain it. It wasn’t actually my intention to go to other areas. “Life is life, and I didn’t anticipate being here for this long,” Gregory remarked.

“A lot of things can happen, including injuries. I am merely present, and I am delighted to be here. It was a bit of a struggle for the first couple of seasons. My alma mater had a really good winning percentage.

A lot of people’s mental health took a hit when they came in and lost. My goals were to win and to improve, so I made it a point to attend year in an effort to hone my skills.

There has been a tremendous leap in quality between this squad and the one from 2019. On attack and defense, I see a great deal of competitiveness. Our progress seems to be increasing daily, and I feel like we’re making progress.

The other members of the group also hold Gregory in high esteem. Regardless of his playing time, he remains the team leader. His contributions are significant, according to Jackson.

He has been much more forthcoming this year. He’s always led by example, but I’ve never seen him so outspoken as he is this year. The defense is benefiting greatly from his leadership position.

Everyone looks up to him because he’s an old soul or the oldest defensive player. Being a veteran of the team, he is well-versed in the ins and outs of getting things done. To the defense, he adds significant leadership experience.

At Little Rock, Arkansas’s War Memorial Stadium on August 29, the Razorbacks will face UAPB in their season opener. Spectators can tune in to watch the match live on ESPNU beginning at 6:30 p.m.
