The 2024 San Francisco Giants were hoping to make the postseason that year, but they ended up going 80-82 and tied for fourth place in the National League West.

If they wish to be serious contenders in 2025, they’ll have to take action. Since Blake Snell has joined free agency and is unlikely to return, they will definitely require reinforcements for their pitching staff.

The signing of left-hander Jose Quintana to a two-year, $24 million contract was a value addition to San Francisco’s rotation, as predicted by Bleacher Report’s Zachary D. Rymer.

Back in 2021, Quintana seemed like a good option for an appetizer, but things have changed since then. “He has been very effective with 76 starts and a 3.39 ERA in the last three years,” Rymer noted.

The upside of the lefty is that he is not a top-tier starter. However, despite his advanced years, he remains a reliable choice for more than 150 innings, the majority of which will consist of ground balls. With 48.2 GB%, he achieved a notable 79th percentile this year.

This left-handed pitcher, who was 35 years old in 2024, made 31 starts with the Mets and had a 10–10 record with a 3.75 earned run average. Additionally, he earned 2.5 WAR while throwing 170 1/3 innings.

If the Giants are serious about signing him, he has the potential to be a reliable starter in the middle of the rotation who gets a lot of ground balls and pitches a lot of innings.

Plus, his price tag won’t break the bank. As they attempt to recover from a couple of poor seasons, $24 million for two years should be within their budget.

To what extent they are considered for Quintana’s job is something to watch with interest.
