The Red Sox are reportedly in talks with a $150 million star to fill in for Juan Soto.
Who exactly will help the Boston Red Sox offense this winter is anybody’s guess.
After the Red Sox surprised many with their performance in 2024, Boston might make a big splash in 2025. The Red Sox are on a roll, and they could use another power hitter in the middle of the lineup.
If the Red Sox are unsuccessful in their pursuit of Juan Soto, a standout player for the New York Yankees, they will have access to less expensive alternatives. According to Julian McWilliams of the Boston Globe, one guy who could be a great fit is Willy Adames of the Milwaukee Brewers.
“Like (Teoscar Hernández), Adames is a right-handed bat who brings some slug,” noted McWilliams. The fact that he accomplishes it while playing shortstop adds to his value. For the past four years in a row, Adams has hit 24 home runs. Not only did he hit 112 RBIs this season, but he also launched 32, both of which were career highs.
The Red Sox clearly have Trevor Story in mind as their starting shortstop, but Adames might be a solid backup and perhaps consider moving to third base or second. What price, though? Depending on market projections, the Sox might not be able to afford Adames’ $150 million release clause. The Red Sox would forego a draft choice and half a million dollars from their international signing pool if he accepted the qualifying offer from the Milwaukee Brewers.
Adames has been linked to Boston multiple times, but the positional fit is still unclear. While this is happening, make sure to monitor him closely in case Soto goes somewhere else.
