Seeking ongoing team improvement, the Baltimore Orioles are approaching the Winter Meetings. The Orioles understood they would have several major decisions to make about free agency coming into the summer, particularly.

Two of their best players from 2024, Anthony Santander and Corbin Burnes, were both on open market and ought to get some significant contract offers. Following two consecutive winning seasons, Baltimore is striving not only to maintain but also build on that with some postseason success.

Burnes last summer gave them an ace on the staff. The Orioles now lack an ace, though, as the gifted right-handed top free agent is absent. Recently, Jake Rill of MLB.com discussed the Orioles’ most pressing needs approaching the Winter Meetings.

The O”s were in this position last winter before making a Feb. 1 trade with the Brewers to acquire 2021 National League Cy Young Award winner Corbin Burnes, who is currently a free agent following an outstanding All-Star season.

Though it would probably cost more than $200 million over six or seven years, there is a possibility the Orioles bring Burnes back. Baltimore might seek a more reasonably priced free-agent hurler or investigate the trade market, which worked out really nicely last time, if he does not want to spend quite that much.

Burnes is probably the main focus, but Baltimore might lose their ace given so many other clubs are chasing him. The gifted right-angler had a (15-9) record with a 2.92 ERA last season.

He was a very excellent pitcher even if his strikeout count dropped. In the postseason, he also gave the Orioles a fantastic game despite receiving a loss. Given how free agency is currently trending, Burnes’s next contract might be far over $200 million, which would be too costly for Baltimore.

They have to substitute one, though, should they lose their ace. Whether they sign someone like Max Fried or trade for a pitcher like Garrett Crochet, the Orioles need an ace to maintain pace in the American League East.

The Orioles have changed their batting order in meantime. They struck a three-year contract with outfield Tyler O’Neill and a one-year contract with catcher Gary Sanchez this weekend.
That could improve Baltimore’s middle of batting order and provide a ready backup for Adley Rutchsman, one with a past showing consistent pop at the plate.
