In 2023, the Buffalo Bills started the same five offensive lineman for every one of their seventeen regular season games, which is an unusual feat, and the outcome was overwhelmingly favorable.

Pro Football Focus placed Buffalo’s offensive line fifth in 2023, but the Bills’ success going forward was clouded by a significant offseason move.

As a result of the salary cap, the Bills had to release veteran center Mitch Morse and replace him with an existing player. Connor McGovern, who had previously played center for Penn State, was switched from first lineman off the bench to starting guard, and David Edwards was moved from being a first lineman to the inside.

The Bills’ offensive line seems to have been much stronger after the 2024 offseason. This is based on just two games played. According to Pro Football Focus’s analytics-based grading system, Buffalo jumped one spot from last week to take fourth place in the league-wide unit rankings. The Indianapolis Colts were ranked first overall, with the Philadelphia Eagles and Detroit Lions following closely behind.

The Bills’ offensive line allowed just five pressures all day, giving the quarterback plenty of time to throw in the victory over the Dolphins. This led to a pass-blocking efficiency score of 87.5, good enough for tenth place in Week 2.

In his fourth year in the NFL, the right tackle seemed to have made a significant improvement. So far this season, the product of Northern Iowa has surpassed his career-best 5.8% clip from previous season, allowing pressure on just 3.9% of pass plays.

Standout performer: Among left tackles, Dawkins has the sixth-best pass-blocking grade (81.6) through two weeks. (Buday, Zoltan)

Buffalo ranks sixth highest in the NFL in terms of the percentage of passing attempts that have resulted in sacks (5.08 percent). The running game features James Cook, who is being sprung by the line and averages 5.0 yards per carry.

Although Dawkins was named the unit’s “best player” by PFF, right tackle Spencer Brown was also an integral part of the success. Due in large part to his athleticism, Brown was able to secure a four-year, $72 million contract deal.

It appears that Brown and Dawkins have nailed a multi-look tackle trap run play.

A lot of groups overlook this idea. It is possible that they lack the necessary tackles. The fact that Dion and Spencer were able to overcome it is a blessing, according to Joe Brady, the offensive coordinator.
Brown, O’Cyrus Torrence, Edwards, McGovern, and Dawkins have been an excellent mix thus far.
