Caleb Williams is just one of several students whose attention has been piqued by rookie quarterback Drake Maye of the New England Patriots.
On Sunday, two of the best quarterbacks from the 2024 NFL Draft class—Maye of the Patriots and Williams of the Chicago Bears—will square off.
Williams professed to have known Maye for some time and had some really glowing things to say about the UNC product.
To quote Williams, “I think his game is exactly what y’all saw in college,” as stated on the Bears’ official team website. I believe he’s quite dangerous. I agree with him. Back in the pocket, I see a towering, powerful person. I believe he contributes to his team’s success.
Maye started the season as Jacoby Brissett’s backup, but she was promoted to starting role in the middle of October. With an 85.1 passer rating and 65.6% completion percentage in five games played (four starts), he has passed for 770 yards, six touchdowns, and four interceptions.
The most remarkable thing, though, is what Maye does when on the ground. Running for an astounding 10 yards per carry, the 22-year-old has accumulated 209 yards and a touchdown.
As shown by his spectacular game-tying touchdown pass in the last seconds of regulation in New England’s Week 9 loss to the Tennessee Titans, he has also demonstrated that he is not frightened of the pressure.
The third overall selection in the draft was Maye. Many questioned whether Maye was the class’s top quarterback in the months preceding up to the draft, but Williams ultimately went first.
Both of these young people still have a ways to go before they can be considered proven. On Sunday, though, we may expect an intriguing matchup.
