Kansas City Chiefs star said l’mleaving for good…….
The Golden State Valkyries will join the 12 existing WNBA teams in 2025, making a total of 13 teams in the league. This expansion will begin with the upcoming season.
This is a very interesting turn of events, and it could not have happened at a better moment for the league to grow in size, given the current surge in interest and popularity across women’s basketball.
This is only the beginning, though, since Golden State has joined the WNBA. Not only that, but expansion franchises are set to debut in the 2026 season in both Portland and Toronto, according to the announcement.
The WNBA has already stated their intention to expand to 16 teams by the end of the 2028 season, so clearly they have no intention of stopping there.
The exact location of this 16th team is currently a mystery. However, one NFL superstar’s desire to participate was made apparent in a story by NFL insider Adam Schefter on October 30.
“Patrick Mahomes and his wife Brittany, who own the NWSL’s KC Current, have met with the WNBA and are in the running to have the league’s next franchise relocate to Kansas City,” the article read. The KC Royals and Sporting KC are also owned by Mahomes, according to Schefter’s X post.
Young Patrick Mahomes has already won three Super Bowls, been named MVP three times, and was named NFL MVP twice. According to reports, Mahomes’ net worth is currently at $90 million. However, that number will increase as he starts to cash in on the $450 million contract extension he signed with the Kansas City Chiefs in 2020.
That is to say, Mahomes appears eager to support a possible WNBA expansion team, and he and the other members of the ownership group have the financial means to do so.
For Sports Illustrated’s ‘On SI’ sites, Grant Young covers women’s basketball, the new york Yankees, and the new york mets. In addition to a Bachelor of Science in Marketing and five years of experience on the University of San Francisco (USF) Division I baseball team, he has a Master of Fine Arts (MFA) degree in creative writing. But now days, Angel Reese is his favorite, not Angels in the Outfield.
