The New England Patriots lost their season opener to the Jacksonville Jaguars 32–16 in London on Sunday morning, dropping them to 1-6 overall. Even though rookie quarterback Drake Maye once again displayed enough talent in spurts to be encouraged about his NFL future, New England suffered yet another heartbreaking loss in a season full of them.

The Patriots frequently inflicted injuries on themselves as a result of poor calls and errors made by both teams. With the game close, special teams allowed a punt return of 96 yards for a touchdown. Too many drops and bad blocks spoiled a lot of the offensive play. Stated differently, New England appeared to be a lousy football team, which is extremely aggravating for head coach Jerod Mayo even though it is not shocking at this point in the season.

Speaking to reporters following the game, the rookie head coach displayed his feelings and criticized his players for being a “soft football team” following the disappointing defeat—the Patriots’ sixth consecutive—and their roster.

“Look, what a disappointing game,” Mayo remarked. “An underwhelming game. We emerged and got right to it. However, overall, I would say that we are a soft football squad. Talk about having the ability to run the ball, stop the run, and cover kicks—all three of which we failed to accomplish today—as a difficult football team.

In reference to Mayo’s remark, the Pats’ day’s total of 38 running yards was pitiful when contrasted to the 171 yards the defense allowed the Jaguars. Although there isn’t much talent on New England’s roster right now, coaches like to emphasize that tenacity and effort are the keys to stopping the run. If Jacksonville was able to achieve that remarkable number, it is evident that the Patriots lacked both of those attributes.

It appears that Mayo and the Patriots will have a lengthy journey home from London.
