Just In: Kansas City Royals’ Seth Lugo has heated conversation with manager Matt Quatraro as he’s removed from.
After allowing three hits over the course of five innings, Tarik Skubal earned his 17th victory, and the Detroit Tigers, who are on a tear, defeated the Kansas City Royals by a score of 4-2 on Wednesday night. This victory brought the Tigers to within a half game of a postseason place with ten games remaining.
As the Tigers (80-73) won their fourth consecutive game and their ninth in the last 11 games, Riley Greene blasted a home run that proved to be the game-winning hit. The series sweep allowed Detroit to draw within a half game of Minnesota (80-72) for the third wild-card place in the American League Conference. This victory was Detroit’s 25th victory in 35 games.
“These guys, first of all, we believe, and second, we come every day to try to win the game, and we are winning a lot, which is fun to watch these guys learn and grow and compete until the end of the game,” said A.J. Hinch, the manager of the Tigers. “We are winning a lot.”
Skubal, who has a record of 17-4 and has won his previous five decisions, strengthened his case for the American League Cy Young Award by tying Atlanta’s Chris Sale for the most wins in the major leagues category. Additionally, he decreased his earned run average to 2.48, which was the highest in the AL. One of his walks was followed by seven strikeouts.
The gentlemen have my utmost admiration. During our most recent visit to this location, we were on the opposite side of the sweep,” Skubal explained. I am proud to say that we have a wonderful and tenacious bunch. That being said, if you just take a look at the season that we’ve had, I believe that it is reflected in this series.
