Anthony Richardson’s stat line rarely provides a complete picture, and it blatantly lies in the Colts’ Week 12 loss to the Lions.
After losing to the Detroit Lions in Week 12, the Indianapolis Colts are now 5-7.
As usual, some people on the internet took the time to blame the Week 12 result on Anthony Richardson’s poor stat line. Although Richardson’s stat line rarely provides the whole picture, his performance in Week 12 is a prime illustration of how statistics can be deceiving.
Shane Steichen, the head coach of the Colts, comments on Anthony Richardson’s performance in Week 12.

Shane Steichen, the head coach of the Colts, was asked about Anthony Richardson’s performance against the Lions since many people thought his stat line wasn’t “reflective of how he played.” Steichen’s response is as follows:

Indeed, I concur with that. His stat line, in my opinion, did not accurately represent his style of play. Looking at the tape again, I felt he performed pretty damn well. Penalties ruined some of our huge plays. Once more, though, I felt he ran the football effectively. He made the right reading and threw it to the right player. Man, I think he did a fantastic job, even if I know he missed a few that he wishes he could get back. I did, in fact.

Despite not allowing a single sack and having zero turnovers in Week 12, the Colts still lost the game by a significant margin. Steichen’s response demonstrates why Ricahrdson’s stat line doesn’t provide a complete picture of his performance.

The penalties, in my opinion, had a significant role. We’ve been quite decent with penalties, in my opinion, but I believe we had some big plays and 96 yards of offense called back on penalties. Creating explosive plays, in my opinion, increases your chances of scoring points. And those are tough when they are called back. That brings us back to the basics, specifics, and technique that we need to improve this week and moving forward because we don’t want to repeat the same mistakes every week.
