The entire season has been a disappointment for the New Orleans Saints. However, they have noticed progress in several areas of their team. They have a strength when they are healthy that they think is a weakness.

When the majority of the Saints’ starting offensive linemen have been available, the offense has been strong. Although rookie offensive tackle Taliese Fuaga has received justifiable praise for his play this year, his tackle partner has also been productive.

Throughout his NFL career, Penning has been the target of criticism from both Saints supporters and the general public. His fight for recovery has persisted.

The young tackle’s run blocking was good before 2024, but now he’s truly exceptional. Just like he did in college, when facing off against far weaker opposition than the edge rushers in the NFL, he’s influencing people.

When it comes to run blocking, Trevor Penning is among the top five RTs. At this point, he is only “average” at pass protection. (This is significant because, on paper, he was the weakest initial pass-protection option.)

Additionally, pass blocking has shown progress. He ranked among the NFL’s worst pass-blocking tackles over the previous two seasons. Even though he was a penalty machine, speed moves off the edge frequently beat him. He seemed considerably more at ease this season.

Oh, and let’s not forget that he’s only 25 years old.

At the age of 23, people were ready to write him off. In the future, in a few years, he will be an integral part of the Saints’ offense.

He was outstanding in Week 10 when the squad defeated Atlanta. He allowed only one pressure during the pass game while repeatedly schooling veteran Matthew Judon.

Penning shown more of that in Week 11, when he faced a Cleveland defensive front that was full of skill.

Together with Fuaga, he made it such that the Browns’ Myles Garrett never had a chance to score. Against that Saints duo, he played one of his worst performances in the NFL.

Progress must be maintained in Penning’s pass protection. That uniformity is not finalized just yet. Having said that, there are far more indications of life now than there were earlier in the season.

The youthful tackle has clearly made strides. His ceiling is really high, and those that gave up on him probably don’t even know it. His growth has been noticed in New Orleans, and they are hoping for even greater things from Penning in the future.
