Chicago had a 4-2 record at the beginning of the season. Everything appeared to be in order. However, the Bears’ nosedive started when they suffered a Fail Mary versus the Commanders. The Bears have now lost five straight games, including two agonizingly close defeats.

Williams appeared to be regressing along the stretch, but he recovered to pass for 340 yards and score two scores in the Vikings’ overtime loss.

Williams has been accused of doing this or that wrong a lot. However, with the right coaching, the majority of that can be fixed. Perhaps a coach needs to gain some perspective. Williams, however, will be alright.

The fact that players like Williams, Bo Nix, and Jayden Daniels are in their rookie season seems to be forgotten by everyone. They will experience periods of subpar performance. It is unavoidable. It’s absurd to dismiss them now, as some have done with Williams. It’s very likely that those remarks won’t hold up over time.

Too many people were trying to minimize Williams while promoting Daniels as the next big thing. But there’s a reason the NFL season lasts 17 games. Quarterbacks’ first eight or nine games are not used to determine their grade. They will be evaluated based on their entire work season.

The Bears players’ desire for Tyson Bagent to start at quarterback was the source of one of the most absurd rumors. Unreal. According to his latest remarks on ESPN.com, Williams defused the situation, as any competent leader would.

Williams remarked, “I think those guys are good, easy.” We discuss it. I believe they fully supported me. People have texted me, called me, or approached me with this recent incident and said, “We’re with you, we’ve got your back.” Things like that and “Let’s go,” you know. This previous few of days have been characterized by that kind of attitude and approach. And it has essentially been that way.

Williams appeared to be stuck to the pocket beneath Shane Waldron. It had a robotic feel. Williams has excelled at extending plays to either run or throw under Thomas Brown. On Sunday, Williams finished 7 for 9 for 146 yards and a touchdown on throws that took three seconds or longer. The yardage and completion rate were both at their highest points in their careers. Even the plays that didn’t yield significant profits were outstanding.

What Williams offers that cannot be taught is this. He was selected first overall in the 2024 NFL Draft for these reasons.

Williams was a wise choice for the Bears to make. However, they made a mistake by keeping Eberflus. Williams will thrive under a youthful, energetic head coach with a clever offensive strategy.

It is still evident that Williams is the Bears’ future.

And if you want to know why Eberflus is the problem, he’s grasping at straws and coming up empty as he tries to fix the sputtering offense. Eberflus at least had the sense not to bench Williams a couple of weeks ago. However, according to espn.com, he was unsure of what else to do.

“There will be changes, adjustments, being made,” Eberflus said. “I’m not going to disclose those right now. I’m not at that point in the process. Monday is a long day in terms of the evaluation of everything, in terms of lineups, in terms of the coaching, in terms of how we need to do better in that coaching and in that communication in-game, during the game, after the game, prior to the game. It’s important that we take time to make those decisions and make the right decisions that’s for the Bears, best for the Bears going forward this week and going forward into the future.”

The Bears needed to beat the Vikings. When it went to overtime, they expected it, according to D.J. Moore’s comments to chicagotribune.com.

“You definitely think something special is about to happen,” Moore said. “When we got to overtime, you’re just thinking, ‘Man, we’re about to win the game.’ ”

It didn’t happen, but the blame can’t hang on Williams. Better days are coming. Wins are coming. It may be 2025 before the Bears take off, but Williams should be the pilot.
