If they lose Cody Bellinger in the upcoming summer, things could take a turn for the worst. Despite Bellinger’s struggles due to injuries and a drop in performance compared to 2023, he remains an invaluable asset to this lineup.

He’s cutting.Had a batting line of 263/.324/.420, 15 HR, and an OPS+ of 108. If he plays in more than 95 games this season, he will have hit the fewest home runs ever with 15.

The Cubs’ struggles can be attributed to his low power numbers. Even though it’s not always a good strategy, the team’s inability to get extra-base hits and home runs is a cause for concern. Their batting average per game (OPS) is in the bottom half of MLB, and this has been a problem all year.

None of those problems would be resolved if Ballinger were to leave. The likelihood that he does not return to Chicago is, however, very high.

That is what Bleacher Report’s Joel Reuter anticipates. In his 2025 Opening Day lineup prediction, Bellinger was listed as a New York Met.

Cody Bellinger would be a good backup plan in the event that the Mets are unable to sign Juan Soto in free agency, even though they are likely to pursue him. Of course, that assumes he decides to forego the last two years of his present deal with the Chicago Cubs in favor of a fresh free agency run.

The Mets are the obvious choice for Bellinger if he is seeking maximum compensation. Over the last 18 months, their owner, Steve Cohen, has made it clear that he intends to assemble the greatest club he can. His penchant for frivolous spending has hurt the Cubs in the past.

A hefty sum would be due to Bellinger from Chicago in the event of his return. It might not be the worst thing to let him go, considering how bad their lineup has been. After all, they could have gotten two players for his price.

The offense’s lackluster play makes this a difficult scenario, but the front staff must give it some thought. If that’s not the case, he could be useful to a New York team.
