There is a limit to how much one can learn by watching six quarters of football. On the other hand, a few things have been clearly evident ever since Andy Dalton took over for Bryce Young as the quarterback for the Carolina Panthers.
One thing to consider is that with Dalton at the helm, this offense is significantly more effective and explosive than it was before. The fact that Diontae Johnson is the best wide receiver on the squad and the clear favorite target for Dalton is another thing that has been abundantly clear because of developments.
During the previous week’s victory over the Las Vegas Raiders, Johnson was able to get 14 targets from Dalton, which was a significant improvement from the previous week’s total of 12 targets from Young. Of all the pass-catchers, that was nine more than any other player.
All of those possibilities were taken advantage of by Johnson, who finished with eight receptions, a game-high 122 receiving yards, and a score.
This week, Johnson has continued his play exactly where he left off, this time against the Cincinnati Bengals from the previous week. Johnson led the squad with ten targets at the halftime break.
Five of them have been caught by him, and they have a combined total of 54 yards. However, Johnson and Dalton have just missed on some extremely deep throws, which means that the total may very well be much higher at this very moment.
Second place goes to rookie receiver Xavier Legette, who has caught all five of his targets from Dalton, including a score with one minute remaining in the second quarter. Legette has received all of his targets from Dalton.
It would appear that Joe Burrow did not have enough time to do the task. At the halftime break, the Bengals have a 21-14 lead after their own scoring drive, which they responded with.
