‘I want my joy back’ — Cincinnati Bengals suspend Josh Newton for 7 games after trade..
- CINCINNATI – Bengals cornerback Josh Newton has been fined $4,885 by the NFL for “unsportsmanlike conduct (violent gesture)” during the team’s 30-24 overtime win against the Denver Broncos last Saturday.
CThe incident took place in the first quarter after Denver quarterback Bo Nix’s incomplete pass to wide receiver Courtland Sutton in the end zone, with Newton in coverage. While neither the broadcast footage nor the All-22 film captures the specific gesture, Newton was seen celebrating the defensive stop with teammate Geno Stone before the video transitioned to the next play.
Newton isn’t the first Bengal to face fines for similar conduct this season. Fellow cornerback Cam Taylor-Britt was fined $9,019 for a violent gesture during the team’s Week 15 win over the Tennessee Titans. Earlier in the season, wide receiver Andrei Iosivas was fined for a similar infraction but successfully appealed, with the league rescinding the penalty. Wide receiver Ja’Marr Chase, however, had his Week 5 fine for a violent gesture upheld after an appeal.
Saturday’s game also saw Denver safety P.J. Locke fined $13,972 for unnecessary roughness. The penalty stemmed from a third-quarter play where Locke led with his helmet, striking Bengals tight end Mike Gesicki in the head during an 8-yard sideline
gain.
