The Lidl-Trek rider, who also already had to miss the European Championships in Belgian Limburg, will not be competing again this road season due to an ongoing issue.

Thalita de Jong, who is said to be in excellent form, will replace Van Anrooij, who understandably is very disappointed. “I am incredibly disappointed, but it is the only right decision,” she stated in the press release.

“I have been struggling with pain and power loss in my left leg and it has become too clear that we need to do more examinations to figure out what’s wrong and determine the best path to a full recovery. It’s, of course, disappointing but I am also trying to stay positive and believe that we will get to the bottom of the issue and that I will back to my best level before returning to racing,” said the versatile Van Anrooij.

Royal Dutch Cycling Federation (KNWU) national coach Loes Gunnewijk also commented on the absence of the 22-year-old lady. “It’s very disappointing, primarily for Shirin, that she can’t ride in the World Championships. But in times like these, health comes first and it’s important to further investigate what exactly is going on. We wish Shirin a lot of strength in her recovery.”

It was also confirmed on Instagram that the season is over for Van Anrooij. “Not the news I wanted to share but we made the decision to end my road season early and to skip the World Championships. I am still proud of what I have done this season. Good luck to all my Lidl-Trek teammates for the last part of their season and to all the Dutch ladies at the World Championships this week!”
