This offseason, the Los Angeles Angels have been quite active, among MLB teams. Former standout starting pitcher Kyle Hendricks was already signed to a $2.5 million, one-year contract. The deal for Jorge Soler, a major leaguer, was also spectacular.
They maintained their aggressiveness and had a seasoned catcher in their lineup on Tuesday.
A $12 million, two-year deal with the Angels has been reached with Travis d’Arnaud. After the Atlanta Braves declined d’Arnaud’s option last week, the Los Angeles Dodgers swooped in to sign him.
When he was in the majors, d’Arnaud was a top choice among catchers. While the 2020 season was cut short due to the COVID-19 pandemic, he was named the Silver Slugger. In 2022, he was also selected for the National League All-Star squad.
But now the veteran seems to be showing signs of ageing. d’Arnaud had a disappointing season with a.238 average and 15 home runs. Opening Day 2025 will be held when he is 36 years old.
With Logan O’Hoppe’s rise to prominence, it becomes an even more intriguing move. With 64 runs scored, 58 RBI, and 20 home runs, O’Hoppe had a breakout season in his major league debut. When the 2025 season rolls around, the 24-year-old will likely start in left field for the Angels.
It’s probable that d’Arnaud will support him.
To watch the Angels spend money in free agency must be a relief for fans. Some, though, may wonder what the big deal is with the players they’ve signed. The best of Hendricks is in the past. While d’Arnaud is struggling in a physically demanding job, Soler is trying his hardest but has an extremely high strikeout percentage.
