ESPN: The Mets win a bidding war against the Phillies to sign a $70 million All-Star from the Chicago White Sox…

The depth front has kept the New York Mets occupied. Ken Rosenthal of The Athletic claims that the Mets have lately acquired another piece in 28-year-old catcher Chris Williams on a minor league contract. The Minnesota Twins chose Williams in the eighth round of the 2017 MLB Draft; he has not yet had a major league appearance.

New York Mets Sign Power-Hitting Catcher to Minor League Deal

Williams has a career slash line of.227/.344 with a.808 OPS, 95 home runs and 303 RBI in 481 minor league games. Williams has some pop; over the previous three seasons, he has slugged 66 homers with 48 of these big balls coming at the Triple-A level.

In 88 games in Triple-A with the Twins last season, Williams had 17 holgers and an 800 OPS. Currently expected to start Francisco Alvarez at catcher, the Mets have Luis Torrens, a late-May acquisition, to support him. Williams was thus brought in as an insurance/depth option, who would most certainly catch in Triple-A Syracuse until he is required in the big-leagues.

Apart from Williams, earlier in the week the Mets signed utility guy Jared Young on a one-year, major league split deal. Most minor league deals the Mets have generated this offseason have gone to pitchers. Williams, Young, Rafael Ortega, Edward Olivares, and Alex Ramirez round out the position players they have signed to minors deals thus far.

Williams provides offensive upside to the top tiers of the Mets’ organization, but it remains to be seen whether he will get his first call-up to the big-leagues in 2025.

Through trade, the Mets acquired center fielder Jose Siri from the Tampa Bay Rays and signed top right fielder Juan Soto on a record-setting 15-year, $765 million contract. On the position player side, they still have gaps in their infield to cover, though.
