Pete Alonso’s winter sweepstakes was quick to pick up steam.
It is well-known that the New York Mets would like to have Alonso return to Queens, provided that doing so would be financially advantageous for the team. Nevertheless, the Mets aren’t the only ones; in a piece from November 5, ESPN’s Kiley McDaniel hinted at the fact that “there are plenty of other teams that like Alonso as a player in the $100 million to $125 million range.”
On Tuesday, Yankees general manager Brian Cashman informed the public that the Mets’ crosstown rivals, the New York Yankees, are among the clubs who have asked about Alonso. This information was provided to the baseball community by Cashman.
When asked if Alonso had been mentioned in his conversation with Scott Boras, Alonso’s agent, Cashman responded, “Yeah, I’m sure he did,” according to SNY. Certainly, Pete performed an outstanding job with the Mets, and there are many other top-tier players available in this market.
“Yes, I did have a quick chat with Scott regarding several of his free agents, as is customary, and Pete is one of them,” Cashman went on to say.
The Yankees’ interest in Alonso is not surprising given the rarity of bona fide sluggers like him entering the free agency market.
Good news for Mets supporters, though: the Yankees probably won’t sign Alonso and Juan Soto this offseason. Soto is probably on his way somewhere, and the Mets might be that somewhere if they’re really after Alonso.
Getting Soto instead of Alonso should make Mets fans happy, even though losing him (particularly to the Yankees) isn’t ideal.
