Much of the upheaval that has occurred within the New York Jets organization this month can be attributed to owner Woody Johnson. Joe Douglas, the general manager, had minimal say in the dismissal of head coach Robert Saleh earlier today, but he was ultimately responsible for the decision. Interim head coach duties were given to defensive coordinator Jeff Ulbrich.

At the news conference where Saleh’s dismissal was announced, he essentially pleaded for renegade edge rusher Haason Reddick to come back, and he did, but it took a few weeks. While wide receiver Davante Adams’ trade is being pushed through, he told reporters during the Atlanta team owners’ quarterly meeting that “thinking is sometimes overrated.”

Although the Jets (3-6) ended their five-game losing run on Thursday night, Sports Illustrated’s Albert Breer covered the situation of the Jets’ executive office during all the transition before the game. Johnson came out looking rather bad in the report.

He warned that things were precarious in the Jets building. According to former employees, “it all starts at the top.” This means that current employees should listen up. Owner Woody Johnson is very invested in the outcome and wants to see it through to victory.

He was also involved in the deal that brought quarterback Aaron Rodgers to the Jets last year, which never materialized due to Rodgers tearing his Achilles tendon. This year, there have been a lot of movements.

Breer claims that Johnson’s penchant for taking advice from, well, everyone on football matters, is one of the issues.

“He listens to too many non-football people on football matters,” Breer said, adding that this has created a climate where the staff does not feel it is conducive to achieving their goals. His over reliance on online news has given him a reputation as a leader who is too easy to read. Many people there are currently being extremely cautious.

Despite the Jets’ recent victory and byproduct of a couple of days off, the Jets still face a formidable opponent at Florham Park. The Mets’ chances of reversing their current fortunes and advancing to the postseason are limited.

In 2025, the Jets will almost certainly undergo some sort of transformation, whether intentional or not. Douglas is entering the last year of his contract with the New York Knicks, therefore the team will need to find a new coach.

According to Breer, any off-season searches for a coach or general manager could run into trouble due to Johnson’s well-known tendency to do his own thing.

Many in the league anticipate a seismic shift following this year, and if it materializes, it may influence the willingness of players like Joe Douglas and Robert Saleh to go there in 2025, according to Breer.
