In Thursday night’s 33-10 victory over the Saints, Barton recorded eight tackles, six of which were solo efforts, along with a sack, pass defensed, fumble recovery, and forced fumble. He scored a defensive touchdown after returning a recovered fumble 52 yards.

The fact that it was Barton’s second goal of the game adds even more credence to his remarkable defensive performance. Unfortunately, Broncos defensive tackle D.J. Jones was flagged for offsides, thus the initial one was replayed.

In retrospect, Barton said, “I was saying it all game” following the Broncos’ 33-10 victory. “It will transpire. It will be returned to me. It will be returned to me. In the end, it came to pass. The timing is completely unpredictable. Being prepared for when the chance arises is all that’s required. It is a rapid process.

Barton is the third Bronco this season to get Conference honors; the others are kicker Wil Lutz, cornerback Patrick Surtain II, and Barton. To make history, the Broncos have not had two defensive players named AFC Defensive Player of the Week in the same season since 2019.

Barton, who was supposed to start with Alex Singleton and take Josey Jewell’s position, signed a one-year agreement with the Broncos in the spring. In Singleton’s absence due to an early ACL tear, Barton has taken charge of the defense alongside his reliable linebacker partner Justin Strnad.

Barton became the sixth linebacker for the Broncos to receive Conference honors; he was the last to do so in 2018, when Von Miller did so. This is the first time Barton has ever received Conference honors. Since its start in 1984, 32 different Broncos have been honored with the DPoW award, which has been presented 40 times.

Barton has started all seven of the Broncos’ games this season, going 4-0. He has recorded 45 tackles, 23 of which are solo efforts, along with one sack, one pass break-up, one forced fumble, and one fumble recovery, which he has returned for a touchdown. He has already played for three different NFL teams after being drafted out of the University of Utah in the third round by the Seattle Seahawks in 2019.
