The latest trade acquisition by the Dallas Mavericks must not be a costly error.

The Dallas Mavericks fanbase has much to anticipate this offseason. First, the team added numerous players. Their free agent signings included 3-and-D forward Naji Marshall. The new swingman was signed swiftly after Derrick Jones Jr.’s re-signing failed. Marshall is an excellent defender who occasionally attacks the hoop, like Jones. Great 3-point shooter, he shot 38.7% last season. Shooter Klay Thompson was the biggest signing. After rejecting the Lakers, the former Warrior inked a three-year deal with Dallas.

Dallas must not extend Quentin Grimes’ contract before the season. Tim Hardaway Jr. was traded for Quentin Grimes to start the summer. Dallas really wanted to move Hardaway Jr.’s deal. Dallas has a promising young guard. Career 3-point shooting average for Grimes is 37.1%. His career field goal conversion rate is 42.8%. Grimes is another superb defender whose fiesty hands and quick feet can trouble his opponents. I’ve seen a lot of Quentin Grimes footage in the last few days, and I think he’ll be great for the Mavs.

He’ll become a top defender, solid 3-point shooter, and growing passer. The Grimes trade improved the team. Grimes’ acquisition made Dallas younger, which was one of several reasons. Grimes must be handled carefully by the Mavericks. He has many injuries that prevent him from playing a full season. In his rookie year, Grimes played only 46 games due to knee issues. He improved in his second year with the Mavs, playing 71 games. Last season, Grimes was inconsistent. Grimes played 46 Knicks games but only six Pistons games. He was different after a January right knee sprain. Grimes was sidelined in March due to injury-related muscle discomfort.

Another issue with Grimes is his restricted free agent status next summer. Thus, the Mavs must handle their new wing carefully. His four-year $11.1 million guaranteed contract with the Knicks in 2021 will pay him $4.2 million next season. This could benefit Grimes. If he performs well and exceeds expectations, Dallas may offer him a hefty contract. Grimes’ contract extension before the season would be risky for the Mavs. They must make sure he’s a good fit because he’s never been healthy for a full season. A solid season for Grimes would undoubtedly raise his contract price, but the Mavs shouldn’t risk extending it before the season.
