ESPN Reports: Atlanta Falcons have just secured a $176.2million experienced star QB from rivals in a blockbuster deal……Read more
When it comes to the NFL trade deadline, many fans and analysts believe the Atlanta Falcons will be looking to add an edge rusher to their roster. Although that isn’t Atlanta’s sole choice.
The Falcons were mentioned as a possible suitor for Tennessee Titans defensive tackle Sebastian Joseph-Day by Kristopher Knox of Bleacher Report on October 23. Joseph-Day may be an asset to the Falcons’ pass and run defense, setting him apart from many other edge rushers on the trade market.
Tennessee might get some swag in the draft from defensive tackle Sebastian Joseph-Day. The 29-year-old is making excellent use of the $4 million he received for a single season. According to Knox, Joseph-Day has started four of the Titans’ six games.
“The Falcons could eye Joseph-Day to help boost a defensive front that has underwhelmed against both the pass and the run (4.4 yards per carry allowed).”
In his five seasons with the NFL, Joseph-Day has failed to accumulate sacks in excess of three. However, thus far this season he has recorded 2 sacks, 3 TFLs, 4 hits on the quarterback, and 1 pass defense.
Those statistics are impressive considering the 29-year-old has only played 43% of Tennessee’s defensive snaps this season. The Falcons shouldn’t think that by acquiring Joseph-Day they can instantly boost his snap load and production. As a rule, that is not how things work.
However, there is more than one way in which Joseph-Day may contribute to the Falcons’ defensive front. His performance this season has been consistently above average as a run defender and edge rusher, according to the player grades provided by Pro Football Focus.
Titans odds might be 1–5. However, Tennessee is now leading the NFL in yards allowed per game, and Joseph-Day is a key cog in their defensive line rotation. They are third in passing yards allowed per game and are in the top five for run defense and pass defense, respectively.
The kind of expertise that NFL clubs seek out in trade deadline additions are also there in Joseph-Day’s resume. He was a key member of the Los Angeles Rams’ 2021 championship team, appearing in the Super Bowl after starting seven games during the regular season.
With six sacks after seven weeks, the Falcons are dead last in the league. Their rushing yards allowed per game ranks 24th as well.
Joseph-Day may return “valuable draft capital” to the Titans, according to Knox’s speculation. On the other hand, his contract is up for renewal next offseason, and he will turn 30 then.
Therefore, Joseph-Day may be a reasonably priced trading target on paper. For the Falcons, who may want to keep their three 2025 draft choices, it might be a game-changer.
The Falcons might be able to get Joseph-Day in exchange for a draft choice. The Falcons would have an opportunity to strengthen their defense in a number of ways, but he wouldn’t be the huge trade that Atlanta supporters are hoping for.
