ESPN Reports: ‘I think I deserve a bit of respect!’ – Chicago Cubs Pitcher ShotaS Imanaga ‘very upset’ with Manager Craig Counsell as he accuses him of trying to…
Ben Brown, a young pitcher with no major league experience, has been placed on the disabled list “for the time being,” as manager Craig Counsell told reporters after Monday’s game, according to the Chicago Sun-Times.
An opening for catcher Christian Bethancourt was created on July 26 when Brown was placed on the 60-day injured list. As soon as star Justin Steele went down following Opening Day, Brown was summoned to the team.
On Monday, the Cubs were preparing to face the Cleveland Guardians. With a record of 1 game under.500, the Cubs are in a tie for the National League’s last Wild Card playoff place.
The neck of Brown was strained. While Counsell has not announced a specific return date to pitching, the Cubs would prefer that the right-hander be “symptom-free” before making his comeback.
Just for the time being, the Cubs want to give Brown a break.
Among the top prospects, the 24-year-old was once ranked by Baseball America and MLB Pipeline. In fifteen appearances since his call-up, he has made eight starts and seven relief appearances, posting a record of 1-3 with a 3.58 ERA. He has walked 19 batters and struck out 64 over 55.1 innings.
On June 8, he faced the Cincinnati Reds in his most recent outing as a pitcher. He went four innings while giving up three earned runs in the loss. He got one out of three walks. Both of his prior rulings had gone against him before he was placed on injured list.
Up until this point, Chicago had been supporting Brown. On July 19, he began throwing with greater force, and by June, he had picked up his throwing again. He went to Arizona at the tail end of July to throw one more bullpen.
Counsell then made note of the fact that he needed to finish a rehabilitation assignment and throw to batters before he could be activated. During that time, at least two weeks would elapse.
Brown, who went to East Setauket, New York’s Ward Melville High School and graduated in 2017, was chosen by the Philadelphia Phillies in the 33rd round of the draft. The Cubs traded reliever David Robertson to the Phillies for him in August of 2022.
Afterwards, Brown progressed through the Chicago Cubs’ minor league system, making four starts for the Tennessee Volunteers in 2022 and 2023 before being promoted to Triple-A Iowa.
Brown solidified his status as an intriguing prospect with his impressive performance with Iowa. He made 22 appearances, 15 of which were starts, and posted a 6-8 record with a 5.33 ERA. He walked 51 batters and struck out 100 in 72.2 innings.
