The future of the youthful Detroit Pistons is still in its formative stages. The team took a giant leap forward on Friday night with a 122-121 win over the Atlanta Hawks. Final seconds determined the one-point triumph, and franchise point player Cade Cunningham scored crucial points when it mattered most.
Cunningham scored 22 points, dished out 13 assists, and grabbed 11 rebounds in his third straight game, achieving a triple-double. In the final seconds of the game, he sealed the deal by making the game-winning basket and then preventing the Hawks from scoring. Cunningham received a glowing recommendation from Pistons head coach JB Bickerstaff following his performance in the team’s fourth win of the year.
Spending time with him, I can tell he’s the one. I don’t say this lightly at all. Bickerstaff said during the postgame press conference that, due to his many talents, he could become a star player for a basketball team. He has game-changing abilities, including scoring, rebounding, and improving his teammates’ play. Cade (Cunningham) has demonstrated exceptional defensive skills and the ability to produce game-winning plays in the last seconds. I believe he can become a superstar, and he will continue to progress.
The Pistons and Cade Cunningham will meet again in the fourth quarter.

With a lead of 24 points in the second quarter, the Pistons continued to dominate the Hawks. At Little Caesars Arena, Atlanta came roaring back in the final seconds to tie the game and take the lead away from Detroit. A late chance for the Hawks to mount a comeback was created by careless play and turnovers. The home team came back thanks to a floater that was knocked down and some outstanding help defense near the basket.
After Wednesday’s devastating loss to the Charlotte Hornets, Detroit bounced back with a win. A putback layup by forward Brandon Miller at the buzzer gave the Hornets the victory after the Pistons were unable to stop them on their last possession.
The Pistons’ late-game strategy is still evolving. The Pistons have had late-game chances to win every game this season with the exception of a blowout loss to the Knicks. They have worked a lot on game-ending strategies and executing the little things to get victories, according to Bickerstaff. After the game, he continued by explaining the Hawks’ final strategy.
When it comes to our offense, Trae Young is up there with the best of them. His foul-drawing style puts a lot of pressure on defenses, which is particularly problematic when the game is close and you know he can make crucial free throws. In my opinion, our team did an excellent job of stifling his offense and making him make a play, and Cade (Cunningham) finished the game strong with a tremendous block. Our team really wanted to win this game. We finished well and were able to secure the victory.
The winning score for Detroit came from a well-balanced team effort. Among the 22 points scored by veterans Tobias Harris and Malik Beasley were a pair of clutch baskets in the final minutes. Another productive game for the Pistons shooting guard Jaden Ivey, who scored 18 points on 7-13 shooting.
