The Arizona Diamondbacks missed the postseason in 2024 after reaching the World Series in 2023. They could be losing a key player in free agency.

USA Today’s Bob Nightengale revealed that the New York Yankees are among six teams looking to sign first baseman Christian Walker in free agency.

“There are at least six teams who plan to aggressively pursue Walker, with everyone involved from the New York Yankees to the Diamondbacks to the Washington Nationals, believing he’ll come at less than half the price of Alonso,” wrote Nightengale. “He could ultimately be involved in bidding war between the Yankees and Mets.”

Walker won his third consecutive Gold Glove Award and is the second-best first baseman available in free agency. Spotrac projects Walker to sign a three-year, $66 million deal in free agency. The Diamondbacks would be losing a key player if they cannot find a way to keep Walker.

2024 was Walker’s eighth season with the Diamondbacks. He slashed .251/335/.469 with 26 home runs. He hit 30-plus home runs in 2023 and 2022. If not for Pete Alonso he would be the best available first baseman by a wide margin.

After missing the postseason the Diamondbacks are in an odd position. They are expected to trade Jordan Montgomery. The team still has young talent, but 33-year-old Walker may not fit into their long-term plans. Teams like the Yankees will be willing to pay handsomely for a player like Walker.
