The goal for the Hokies going into this week’s matchup is to get over their Saturday loss to Rutgers. This week should be focused on improving because there were a lot of different things that went wrong for the defense in that game, especially in the passing and run games. Especially considering the short turnaround time. Having said that, let’s examine the top three Miami Hurricanes offensive players to keep an eye on this Friday night.
1. Cam Ward, the quarterback
This season, Cam Ward has been mentioned as a potential Heisman Trophy winner. He has led the Hurricanes to a 4-0 record while throwing for 1,439 yards, 14 touchdowns, and just 2 interceptions. Ward completed 70% of his throws last week against South Florida, throwing for 404 yards, three touchdowns, and one interception. The Hokies’ pass defense, which allows only 160 passing yards per game on average and limits opponents to 33.9% on third down attempts, will be put to the test in this game. This will be a test for both teams because Ward is currently averaging 359.8 passing yards per game on 72% pass accuracy for the season.
2. Xavier Restrepo, WR
Dec. 28, 2023; Miami; Bronx, New York, USA With Sebastian the Ibis as his mascot, Hurricanes wide receiver Xavier Restrepo (7) celebrates his touchdown reception in the second half of the 2023 Pinstripe Bowl at Yankee Stadium versus the Rutgers Scarlet Knights.
Xavier Restrepo, a wide receiver for the Hurricanes, has caught 20 receptions for 362 yards and five touchdowns this season, averaging 90.5 yards per game. Xavier had six receptions for 99 yards and one touchdown in the previous game; his longest reception against South Florida was 28 yards. Everyone will be closely watching the matchup between him and the Hokies’ secondary since Xavier has shown in every game this season that he can be a deep threat for the Hurricanes.
