As Shohei Ohtani draws closer to winning his third MVP trophy, he also happens to create even more history in the process.
In Sunday’s 9-2 victory over the Atlanta Braves, the Los Angeles Dodgers designated hitter went 2-for-4 with a walk, a run, and two RBI. With the two doubles, he raised his season total to a career-high 32 and his total number of extra-base hits to 86.
Ohtani is at bat right now.290 with a.988 OPS, 7.4 WAR, 117 runs, 106 RBI, 47 home runs, and 48 stolen bases during the season. In terms of home runs, runs, slugging percentage, OPS, total bases, and WAR, the 30-year-old is the league leader.
Ohtani became one of just two players in history to have at least 85 extra-base hits and 45 stolen bases in a single season with his two doubles on Sunday, per StatsMuse Baseball. The last person to accomplish the feat was Hugh Duffy, who did so in 1894 while playing with the Boston Beaneaters.
Ohtani inked a 10-year, $700 million contract with the Dodgers last December in part because of his record-breaking output. Due to elbow surgery he had last fall, he hasn’t played on the field or on the mound since joining the team, but the two-way standout may get the chance to do so soon.
Ohtani, who won two MVPs with the Los Angeles Angels in 2021 and 2023, is currently one of 33 players in history to have won multiple MVPs. If he finishes in the top 11, though, that number may rise to 11.
With 13 games remaining, the Dodgers lead the NL West by 3.5 games, which puts Ohtani on pace to compete in his first postseason since joining the major leagues in 2018. First pitch is scheduled for 7:20 p.m. ET on Monday. If Los Angeles can salvage a split with the Braves, it will enhance its seeding.
