Emotional Departure: As brilliant star player for the brewers waves goodbye and announces his contract termination with severe allegations, tears well up across the room as he announced his…….Read more
The New York Mets beat the Milwaukee Brewers in the playoffs and sent them out. Before the first game, they might try to find ways to save money.
Zachary D. Rymer of Bleacher Report told the Brewers they should sell Devin Williams before he becomes a free agent next winter. He did this by listing each team’s biggest trade chip.
“The Brewers traded Josh Hader and Corbin Burnes shortly before free agency was beginning to beckon for the pair, so why wouldn’t they do the same for Devin Williams,” he wrote.
Devin Williams’ club has the choice to pay him $10.5 million in 2025. If they don’t, he will be free to sign with any team. Spotrac thinks he can get a five-year, $95 million deal on the free agent market. The Brewers don’t give out that much money, and they often trade star pitchers before they become free agents.
“General manager Matt Arnold has already spoken about needing to be “open-minded” in this regard, and Williams’ trade value may be too great not to cash in,” wrote Rymer. “As a two-time All-Star with a career 1.83 ERA, he’s arguably the best reliever in baseball.”
The Trevor Hoffman National League Reliever of the Year Award has been given to Williams twice. He has also been an All-Star twice. But he hasn’t been there in October, no matter how good he is during the regular season. When he punched a wall and broke his hand, he missed the playoffs in 2021. He gave up two earned runs in 2/3 of an inning in 2023. He let Pete Alonso hit a three-run home run in the ninth inning of a 2024 game that won it.
“As nice as it would be to have the 30-year-old back in the bullpen in 2025, it could be even nicer to have whatever players he might bring back,” said Rymer. “To this end, the Brewers could aim to swap him for starting pitching or a bat.”
