All the Chicago Bears have to do is guard Caleb Williams better.

The Bears have left their franchise quarterback, the man they selected with the first overall pick in the 2024 NFL Draft, Williams, high and dry. After letting him take a beating in the first three games, they stabilized the ship and have since allowed sacks in large numbers again.

No quarterback in the league has taken more sacks than Williams (38 in nine games) so far this season. The Chicago offense isn’t going to work for any quarterback, talent level or not, if that pattern keeps up.

On top of that, the Bears may lose a starting lineman to free agency this spring, which would be a major setback. Center Coleman Shelton of the Chicago Bears was recently pegged by Bleacher Report’s NFL Scouting Department to leave for the Los Angeles Chargers before the season ends.

The fact that quarterback Bradley Bozeman is prepared to defend him is a positive sign of the hard-nosed culture that Jim Harbaugh hopes to establish. Although he is still welcome, his 53.8 PFF score puts him in the 33rd spot among 35 centers. The writers speculated that the Bolts, whose center’s contract is about to expire, may seek a replacement. He will be 30 years old soon.

To avoid having a hole in the offensive line next year, they should probably go with a veteran. When he becomes a free agency next season, Coleman Shelton will have a solid argument for starting. The 29-year-old’s PFF score put him in tenth place among all centers going into Week 11.

After playing with the Los Angeles Rams for five years and helping them win a Super Bowl ring in 2021, Shelton inked a one-year, $3 million deal with the Chicago Bears this winter. He has started every game since the 2022 season began, including each of the nine games he has played in this year with the Bears.

No matter how terrible the Bears’ offensive line has been, starting over is never a smart move. While it’s admirable that the Bears want to hold on to Shelton, it’s not obvious if they’re prepared to outbid potential suitors like the Chargers.
