BREAKING: Paul Skenes Re-Signs Cubs, Commits to Finish Career in Pittsburgh…See more
The Pittsburgh Pirates had a lot of things they needed to work on going into this summer. The team had to make certain choices because of the future free agents. But Andrew McCutchen won’t be among those departing.
The Pirates revealed Monday morning that they are bringing back the city’s face on a $5 million, one-year contract.
The front office and the fan base will both treasure having McCutchen, who is by far the most well-liked player to don the black and gold in the 2010s, lead this new era of Pirates baseball.
McCutchen will be in his 17th major league season and his 12th with the Pirates. Players like McCutchen are rare in today’s game, so having a franchise spokesperson like this is quite unique.
McCutchen, who is currently 38 years old, has continued to be a good bat despite his advanced age.
He participated in 120 games for the team last season, hitting 20 home runs and slashing.232/.328/.411 with a 105 wRC+ and a 0.5 fWAR.
McCutchen’s eye and batted ball statistics remain as keen as they were in 2013, when he was named the National League’s MVP. He has a chase rate in the 100th percentile and a barrel rate in the 81st percentile.
