During the initial 5 offensive possessions of the Jets, the Colts defense displayed flawless performance by causing 5 consecutive three-and-outs, limiting the average yards gained per drive to just 5.4. Regrettably, they eased up slightly just before halftime, surrendering a 76-yard touchdown and then yielding 4 additional touchdowns in the second half.
Nevertheless, 2 of those offensive possessions were set up by short distances to the end zone caused by an Anthony Richardson sack fumble and a subpar Rigoberto Sanchez punt, combined with a fair catch interference penalty, leaving the defense with limited options to prevent the scores.
In general, the Colts limited the Jets to 253 yards of total offense and achieved a 94th percentile defensive performance with a 55.6% Drive DSR. Even though they allowed 27 points, the defense performed admirably.
This year has been challenging for Aaron Rodgers, and the Colts’ defense added to his difficulties. The Jets ranked 6th from the bottom in passing efficiency per dropback according to EPA, and had the 2nd lowest Pass Success Rate. Rodgers, with the lowest rate of successful passes among all quarterbacks, was unable to advance the team down the field. It’s not shocking at all, considering he ranked 5th lowest in net yards per dropback for the week.
Throughout the season, the passing defense has climbed two positions to reach 14th place in defensive EPA/d and 17th place in defensive PSR. DVOA does not share such a positive outlook, as it places the Colts’ pass defense in the 22nd position. DVOA is modified to account for the opponent, which likely clarifies the discrepancy.
