Thursday night’s nail-biting 35-34 victory over the Cincinnati Bengals moved the Baltimore Ravens’ record to 7-3.

After losing their first two games in a row, they have won seven in a row, and Lamar Jackson is back on top as the favorite for most valuable player. Having said that, their defense is an important matter.

Of all NFL teams in 2024, the Ravens’ defense has allowed the third-most yards (3,679) and the third-most points (253) allowed. While the fact that they have played more games than most teams (ten versus eight or nine) makes that skewed, it is still not acceptable. When adjusted for points per game, Baltimore is the ninth-worst team in the NFL. Seven of the Ravens’ ten games this season have seen scoring margins of 25 points or higher.

It was clear that Baltimore’s defense was unprepared on Thursday night. Even though Ja’Marr Chase is a top-tier NFL wide receiver, the Ravens’ defense allowed him to score three touchdowns on 264 receptions.

Several tackles were missed by the Ravens during Chase’s first score. He was able to pause in front of the end zone for a few seconds on his second before reversing into it since he was wide open. Not great for a squad that wants to be in the Super Bowl, needless to say.

The Ravens’ high-end offensive talent, led by Lamar Jackson, helped Baltimore win the game, solidifying their status as one of the NFL’s premier teams. His team will always have a shot thanks to Jackson, who is on track to earn his third consecutive Most Valuable Player title.

But the football Ravens aren’t perfect. Improving their defense is crucial if they want to win the Super Bowl this year or even just go to the playoffs.
