Breaking: DJ Moore, Chicago Bears WR Agrees to contract extension, Reportedly worth $9m-plus per….Read more
The coaching staff of the Chicago Bears has already felt the effects of the team’s bad run.
Head coach Matt Eberflus promised adjustments after Sunday’s 19-3 loss to the lowly New England Patriots, the Bears’ second game in a row without an offensive touchdown.
Anyone may have guessed what that meant.
Chicago Bears offensive coordinator Shane Waldron, who was hired in January from the Seattle Seahawks, was fired on Tuesday, according to the team’s announcement. Tom Brown, who had been serving as the passing game coordinator, was elevated to the job of offensive coordinator.
“After evaluating our entire operation, I decided that it is in the best interest of our team to move in a different direction with the leadership of our offense,” a statement from Eberflus said. This choice was approached with care and consideration, and everyone involved acted politely throughout the process. Please accept my sincere appreciation for Shane’s hard work and best wishes for his future endeavors.
With 38 sacks to his name, first-round pick Caleb Williams is the NFL leader in that category, and the Bears’ offense ranks 30th and 24th, respectively, in those categories. It was time for a change for the Bears, who had dropped to 4-5 and were on a three-game losing run.
Eberflus, who has taken most of the heat for the Bears’ recent losing run, will soon be the center of attention after Waldron’s dismissal. After taking a zinger from Monday’s ESPN David Kaplan 1000 radio presenter, Eberflus was also the target of online ridicule.
During his weekly radio appearance, Eberflus’ phone went out for the third time, prompting the comment, “Coach, your cellphone is as bad as the offense right now” (quote via The Athletic).
Eberflus has a head coaching record of 14-29 in the NFL, which isn’t good enough to compete at the highest level. There will be no shortage of talented assistants eager to take over Williams’ responsibilities if he is unable to resolve the issues by the year’s end, after having three years to do so and selecting his franchise quarterback.
The Bears’ Tuesday was a gloomy one, but if they can’t turn things around and win again, much worse days are ahead.
