BREAKING: Derrick Henry Re-Signs Ravens, Commits to Finish Career in Baltimore Rav…See more
ALCOHOL — After falling behind the Pittsburgh Steelers in the AFC North, the Baltimore Ravens are now tied for first place with their division rival.
Three touchdown passes by quarterback Lamar Jackson and two crucial turnovers by the Baltimore defense helped the Ravens defeat the Steelers, 34-17, on Saturday. This came after eight of the previous nine games between the two teams. Both the Steelers and the Ravens have a 10–5 record with two weeks to go.
After losing control of the ball nine times in a row against Pittsburgh, Baltimore spent the whole week emphasizing the need of maintaining possession. Marlon Humphrey returned an interception 37 yards for a score on Saturday, and the Ravens also recovered a Russell Wilson fumble within their own 5-yard line.
The Ravens hadn’t beaten the Steelers at home since 2019 and hadn’t beaten them since 2022 until this triumph. The Ravens have now qualified for the playoffs six times in the last seven years.
Summary of the QB: Although Jackson wasn’t quite on fire, he was deadly in the red area. The turnaround for Jackson was remarkable, as he threw touchdown passes of 9, 14, and 7 yards. In his five previous starts versus Pittsburgh, he had thrown for five touchdowns. This season, Jackson threw for 37 touchdowns, which marks a new franchise record.
It all came down to Humphrey’s fourth-quarter pick-6. The Ravens were riding high with a 24-17 lead until Lamar Jackson threw an interception in the end zone, ending their momentum. Humphrey, however, recovered an interception by Russell Wilson and returned it 37 yards for a touchdown two plays later. The Ravens’ pass defense, which was rated 31st in the NFL coming into this game, allowed their first defensive score of the season.
Derrick Henry, the running back, had the most unexpected performance. After a disappointing 65-yard showing last month in Pittsburgh, he ran for 162 yards against the Steelers, his first career 100-yard game. Three of Henry’s preceding five games had seen him held to less than 70 yards rushing, so it had been a rough patch for him.
Henry has joined an exclusive club after rushing for 1,500 yards in four consecutive seasons; he is second only to Barry Sanders (who had five).
Good trend: After recovering a Wilson fumble within their own 5-yard line, the Ravens went on a 96-yard touchdown drive in the second quarter, proving once again that they are the masters of marathon possessions. The record-setting eighth touchdown drive of 90 yards or more in NFL history was capped by a 14-yard touchdown pass from quarterback Lamar Jackson to wide receiver Rashod Bateman. With five touchdown drives of 90 yards or more, the Buffalo Bills are the next-closest team. (Jamison Hensley quotes)
