The Tennessee Titans have an early morning.
Adam Schefter of ESPN reports that the trade involving the Tennessee Titans and the Kansas City Chiefs for star wide receiver DeAndre Hopkins is nearing completion. Hopkins joins the two-time defending Super Bowl winners after being the subject of trade speculation for a long time.
A fifth-round pick with conversion potential into a fourth-rounder is supposedly going to Tennessee.
The 32-year-old Hopkins joined the Titans’ roster during the summer, giving the receiving corps a much-needed boost. In what was essentially a return to form for him, he caught 75 catches for 1,057 yards and seven touchdowns last season. But he hasn’t been nearly as effective this year, with only 15 receptions for 173 yards and a score.
The Titans bolstered the receiving corps of rookie quarterback Will Levis with the additions of Calvin Ridley and Tyler Boyd during the summer. Levis has deteriorated from his freshman year, and nobody on the squad has thrown for 200 yards, so clearly that strategy isn’t working. The Titans’ desire to recoup some losses at 1-5 on the year is reasonable.
From the worst club in the AFC South to the only one still undefeated, Hopkins has seen it all. Plus, he’ll be teaming up with Patrick Mahomes, the two-time MVP who hasn’t been stellar this year but will surely turn things around. With Rashee Rice and Marquise “Hollywood” Brown both out for the season, Kansas City is getting some much-needed outside help in this deal.
Following last week’s trades of Davante Adams to the Jets and Amari Cooper to the Bills, Hopkins becomes the third high-profile wide receiver to depart.
