According to Robert Murray of FanSided, the Chicago White Sox are poised to pass on first baseman/outfielder Gavin Sheets.
Players on the 40-man roster with fewer than six years of Major League Baseball service are currently subject to a contract tender as the league waits for all 30 clubs to make a decision. At least one of those clubs has decided not to extend a contract offer to Gavin Sheets, a first baseman and outfielder, according to Robert Murray of Fansided. Sheets will be able to sign with any team in the MLB once the deal is finalised, bringing the Chicago White Sox’s roster down to 38 players.
The 28-year-old Sheets debuted on June 29, 2021, with the Chicago White Sox. He was selected by the team in the second round of the 2017 MLB Draft. Not quite living up to the expectations the White Sox had hoped for from their former second-round pick, Sheets hit just.230/.295/.385/.680 for an OPS+ of 90 in his four years with the team.
Sheets had no realistic chance of making the White Sox roster in 2025, what with the signing of veteran outfielder Austin Slater, who will see most of the action in right field and designated hitter, and the team’s hopes for a return to form from first baseman Andrew Vaugh, who will also see time in the designated hitter role.
Spotrac estimates that the Chicago White Sox will earn about $2 million from this deal, so it was a pretty easy choice for them to make. Once the transfer is finalised, Sheets will have the opportunity to sign a new contract as a free agent. A source close to the MLB trade rumours claims that whatever club chooses to acquire Sheets will have club control for three years.
The White Sox may re-sign Sheets for a lower price in the future, but it wouldn’t make much sense given that the organisation is starting a rebuild and trying to add youth. Currently, the White Sox have around $2 million in additional funds that they may use to either acquire a seasoned reliever or a depth starter that they can target for a trade next year.
