Breaking: Matt O’Riley heads to Southampton as Celtic’s departure is “far away”

Manager Russell Martin reportedly wants to re-sign O’Riley after having done so with MK Dons. But personal terms would be a huge obstacle to any possible shift, says the Southern Daily Echo. Earlier articles stated that Southampton is prepared to spend around £25 million (jota), which would be more than the Scottish transfer record, to acquire O’Riley. According to the Daily Echo, though, a transfer agreement is still in the works since Southampton must first persuade O’Riley to go from Parkhead to St. Mary’s.

O’Riley and the club may be able to come to an agreement on a transfer fee, but whether or not they actually negotiate a contract is a big unknown. Southampton reportedly would not pay the player the amount he demands. O’Riley, who joined Celtic from MK Dons for £1.5 million in January 2022, has attracted interest from clubs throughout the world. He is 23 years old.

Several teams, including Roma and Atletico Madrid, have been linked to moves for the playmaker. Brendan Rodgers was hesitant to let go of one of his top players in January, and the Scottish Premiership winners turned down proposals from Atletico Madrid for their star man.

The rumours around O’Riley will surely intensify as a result of his excellent performance with the Hoops, especially with two months of the summer window still left. Across all competitions last season, he tallied 19 goals and added 18 assists.
