After sitting out two weeks to make room for veteran Joe Flacco, the Indianapolis Colts’ quarterback Anthony Richardson had a breakout game against the New York Jets.
This study will concentrate on Richardson’s play in the fourth quarter, but considering the circumstances and narrative surrounding the young field general going into week 11, his entire game deserves credit. The data was shared by Pro Football Focus on X.
With one touchdown (to Josh Downs) and no interceptions, Richardson threw for 272 yards in the game. He finished with three touchdowns overall, including the game-winning run with under a minute remaining in the fourth quarter and two more scores on ten carries for 32 yards.
Considering the former Florida Gator had two fumbles, one of which was lost, Richardson has a long way to go before he can be considered a franchise quarterback. Richardson played admirably under the microscope after being benched in favor of Flacco, displaying this trait most prominently in the final quarter.
In his first season in the NFL, Richardson showed he can overcome adversity by completing 8 of 10 passes (80%) for 129 yards and two touchdowns (one passing and one on the ground). Although Richardson’s success has gotten a little out of hand, it’s inspiring to watch the quarterback overcome so much hardship to produce a game-winning effort.
Richardson has a lot of untapped potential; his heroic performance in week 11’s match versus New York was just the beginning. For Richardson, this is a career-defining opportunity to respond with a victory to keep his team in the playoff hunt after fans and coaches had witnessed his worst performance.
But after that, the Detroit Lions are up next at Lucas Oil Stadium, so things are about to get considerably tougher. We’ll find out whether Richardson needs another miraculous fourth quarter performance to secure an unlikely victory.
