The Cubs are expected to be among the front-runners to sign a star who will cost $174 million.
This offseason, the Chicago Cubs have the resources to make a major impression.
Although the Cubs have a lot of talent on their roster and may acquire even more this winter, Chicago won 83 games in 2024. The Cubs may need to upgrade at first base, according to reports, and there are some excellent free agency options available.
Pete Alonso of the New York Mets is arguably the most fascinating first baseman on the open market at the moment. Over the past six seasons, including the 60-game 2020 season, he has launched 226 home runs, making him one of baseball’s top sluggers.
Zach Pressnell of Newsweek listed Chicago as one of the New York star’s top landing destinations because he is the kind of player who could elevate the Cubs’ offense.
“The Chicago Cubs have been heavily linked to Alonso dating all the way back to early June of this year,” said Pressnell. “A huge slugger at first base would allow Chicago to move Michael Busch into the DH or around the field.
“Craig Counsell’s team would move in the right direction with Alonso, the Cubs’ biggest acquisition of the season. Sometimes it’s more important to add a top talent when he’s available than it is to find the ideal fit for your team. The Cubs will regret not making an attempt to acquire Alonso.
The club should be thinking about making an all-out move like landing Alonso. He would be the team’s best slugger right away. Craig Counsell wasn’t given a historic contract by the Cubs last offseason in order to rebuild. The Cubs want to compete, and acquiring Alonso might be a quick way to get there.
