On the occasion of Senior Day, the defense of Notre Dame delivered yet another outstanding performance in front of the home field fans. During the first half of the game, the Irish did not allow the Cavaliers to score any points, they brought in three interceptions, and they both created and recovered two fumbles.
The Irish only allowed 128 yards on the ground and 172 yards through the air, and this was despite the fact that they had plenty of time to play with the game already well out of reach. The Notre Dame defense is currently utilizing a significant amount of “juice” in their game.
This group plays football at a high level, demonstrating confidence, competence, and physicality. The program’s beating heart is and will continue to be this particular unit.
The offense of Notre Dame does plenty, but there are times when it leaves a lot to be desired. For the majority of the year, the offense of Notre Dame has felt like it is still in the process of developing for a variety of reasons, ranging from personnel difficulties to injuries. This was not the cleanest day for the Irish offense; there were far too many penalties that killed drives, which led to Notre Dame having a record of just 1-12 on third down in this game.
An spectacular touchdown pass of 76 yards was thrown by Jeremiyah Love, which contributed to Notre Dame’s overall ground yardage total of 234 total yards. Riley Leonard completed 22 of 33 passes for 214 yards, three touchdown passes, and one interception while passing the ball. There were a number of catchable balls that have been dropped, as well as a few passes that Leonard has just failed to catch.
The passing game at Notre Dame continues to be uneven up to this point. It is what it is at this point in the season, and it is plenty to win with for the time being when it is that way. It is imperative that the Irish extract as much productivity as they possibly can from it, while simultaneously placing a greater emphasis on Love, Price, and the mobility that Leonard brings to the table.
If the Irish are selected for the College Football Playoff, it is reasonable to inquire whether the passing game will need to be improved in order for them to make a deep run.
