Reports: Fans in celebration as New York Rangers reunites and brings back former top star in a blockbuster move

After reaching an agreement on a one-year, two-way deal that features a salary of $775,000 at the National Hockey League level, Matthew Robertson will be returning to the New York Rangers organization for a fourth season in 2024-25. This defenseman, who is 23 years old, has not yet made his debut in the National Hockey League. Robertson, who was selected in the second round of the 2019 National Hockey League Draft (with the 49th overall pick), had spent the last three seasons playing for the Hartford Wolf Pack of the American Hockey League.

When the Rangers needed a defenseman to fill in for a player who had been suspended or injured on their blue line, Robertson was not called up to the team. This was the case even though veteran Ben Harpur was sitting out with an injury. Brandon Scanlin made his debut in the National Hockey League on March 26 during a game against the Philadelphia Flyers. Connor Mackey, who has played in forty games in the National Hockey League, was called up to play on January 27 against the Ottawa Senators.

Robertson is now ranked ninth, at best, on the Rangers’ organizational depth chart for defenseman. This is due to the fact that Harpur is healthy for the current season and Chad Ruhwedel has returned to the team on a one-year contract. After undergoing surgery for a torn pectoral muscle, Harpur, who is now 29 years old, was only able to participate in seven games with the Wolf Pack during the previous season.

Over the course of the last four days, the Rangers have signed a defenseman on three of those days. A one-year, two-way contract was signed by Ruhwedel on Friday. He is a free agent who is not restricted in any manner. And on Saturday, the Rangers reached an agreement with Braden Schneider, a restricted free agent who does not have arbitration rights, to sign a contract worth $4.4 million over the course of two years.

As a member of the Hartford Wolf Pack, Robertson participated in 68 games during the previous season, which was the most in his professional career and the second most among Wolf Pack defensemen. In addition to leading the Wolf Pack defenseman in shots on goal with 131, he finished with 21 points (four goals and 17 assists). In the ten games that were played in the Calder Cup playoffs, he had one assist and a minus-11 rating.
