The 2024 South Carolina Gamecocks have a 6-3 record and have lost to Ole Miss, Alabama, and LSU, so they have little chance of making it to the College Football Playoffs. Nonetheless, they can wreak havoc before selection Sunday if they so like.

In 2024, South Carolina can easily become a 7-2 or better football club with just two or three plays to spare. In two of the three losses this season—to Alabama and LSU—the final score was decided by a combined total of five points. All signs point to the 2024 Gamecocks being among the nation’s top teams.

With three games remaining in the season, the Gamecocks have a chance to ruin Missouri’s and Clemson’s wins. Clemson and Missouri are both 7-2 so far this season. If Missouri loses again, their prospects of making the playoffs will be essentially ruined. South Carolina, Alabama, and Texas A&M will all suffer defeats as a result. If the Tigers were to lose, they would no longer be in the running for the SEC Championship, and the Gamecocks would move up to first place in the conference.

If Clemson were to win their conference, a loss against South Carolina would not necessarily put an end to their playoff aspirations. At this moment, SMU holds top place in the league and is the only team without a loss. Two conference teams, Clemson and Miami, are one loss behind the Mustangs. If SMU and Miami do make it to the ACC title game, Clemson will be in a tight spot if they want to compete for a spot in the College Football Playoff as an at-large team. In addition to beating their archrivals, South Carolina has a golden opportunity to eliminate the Tigers’ title hopes.

The Gamecocks may not have a shot at an at-large invitation and will not be able to participate in the SEC Championship game, but they still have plenty to play for. The Gamecocks should be pushed forward till the end of 2024 if they achieve their first nine-win regular season since 2013 and crush their greatest opponents’ expectations.
