Rookie cornerbacks Cooper DeJean and Quinyon Mitchell are making great strides, which bodes well for the secondary’s future with the Philadelphia Eagles.
In Week 10, the first- and second-round picks both had strong games as the team defeated the Dallas Cowboys 34-6.
Two receptions were allowed on four targets and five targets, respectively, by them.
Mitchell limited his targets to 14 yards as the closest defender in coverage by forcing tight windows on three of them.
Despite having five targets, DeJean’s catch rate was -22.9%, resulting in just five yards. Heading into Week 11’s game against the Washington Commanders, the Iowa product has the greatest coverage grade (85.9) and is now the second-highest graded cornerback in the NFL (83.6).
The most bizarre aspect of it all is that these two had only begun.
Veteran cornerback Darius Slay of the Philadelphia Eagles remarked, “It’s going to be great, man,” when asked about the team’s secondary going forward. I know these men will take excellent care of this room, so I’m going to be thrilled when I leave the game. They are experts at it. They take in information, process it, and then put it into practice every single day.
The two young kids have stepped up big time when Slay has been out with an injury this season.
“I truly never fret over them,” Slay declared. Sometimes you have to worry about some people when you’re just starting off. Those individuals are not a concern. They’re on top of it. We have daily meetings. All they do is probe. In that they inquire, they are similar to my role as a rook. A lot of newbies aren’t sure what questions to ask at first. That group isn’t. So now I know their capabilities.
On Thursday night, the Eagles’ rookies will go on the Commanders, who pose a formidable challenge. However, given their current performance, they should have no problem limiting Jayden Daniels’s weaponry.
