A rookie pitcher named Ben Brown has been placed on the disabled list “for the time being,” according to manager Craig Counsell’s announcement to the media on Monday following the team’s game, as reported by the Chicago Sun-Times.
Catcher Christian Bethancourt had to make room for Brown, thus he was put on the 60-day injured list on July 26. When Justin Steele, a great player, went down after Opening Day, Brown was called up early in the season.
On Monday, the Cubs were preparing to face the Cleveland Guardians. The Cubs are vying for the National League’s final Wild Card playoff position, and they’re just one game under.500.
The neck of Brown was strained. Counsell has said that he does not yet have a scheduled return to pitching, but the Cubs would rather the right-hander not experience any “symptoms” before he returns to the mound.
Just for the time being, the Cubs want to give Brown a break.
At one point, the 24-year-old was listed as one of the top prospects by Baseball America and MLB Pipeline. In fifteen appearances since his call-up, he has made eight starts and seven relief appearances, posting a record of 1-3 with a 3.58 ERA. He has 64 strikeouts and 19 walks after 55.1 innings.
On June 8, he faced the Cincinnati Reds in his most recent outing as a pitcher. He went four innings while giving up three earned runs in the loss. He got one out of three walks. He has already lost his last two choices before being placed on injured list.
Before this, Chicago had been stepping up their game against Brown. He resumed throwing in June and began throwing with greater force on July 19. He went on a bullpen trip to Arizona at the month’s conclusion in July.
Counsell then made note of the fact that he needed to finish a rehabilitation assignment and throw to batters before he could be activated. During that process, at least two weeks would go by.
Brown was chosen by the Philadelphia Phillies in the 33rd round. He graduated from Ward Melville High School in East Setauket, New York in 2017. The Cubs traded reliever David Robertson to the Phillies for him in August of 2022.
After that, Brown progressed through the Chicago Cubs’ minor league system, making four starts for the Tennessee Volunteers in 2022 and 2023 before getting promoted to Triple-A Iowa.
With the Iowa Hawkeyes, Brown established himself as a promising prospect thanks to his impressive performance in 22 games (15 starts) while posting a 6-8 record and a 5.33 earned run average. He walked 51 batters and struck out 100 in 72.2 innings.
