A.J. Ellis, a former catcher for the Los Angeles Dodgers, is supposedly being considered for the managerial position that is now open with the Chicago White Sox.
For nine years in Los Angeles, Ellis was Clayton Kershaw’s go-to catcher, and that’s a memory that Dodgers fans will never forget. Ellis has been in the San Diego Padres organization ever since he finished his playing career with them in 2018.

Though his precise function has remained unclear, the Padres added Ellis to their baseball operations department in 2019. Notwithstanding, Ellis has had a significant effect on the organization’s younger players.

Padres catcher Austin Hedges remarked, “He helped remind me of who I am as a person, that my title is not ‘baseball player.'” My roles as a son, friend, and teammate are far more significant to me than any other title. When he was going through tough times, he would send me Bible verses that spoke to my heart. His encouragement and support, even in the smallest of ways, helped me get back on my feet, and once I did, it didn’t stop.

“He has been an incredibly influential figure in my life.”

The White Sox are reportedly down to three candidates for manager, with Ellis being one of them (Sox Machine, Josh Nelson, and James Fegen). Two more are Skip Schumacher and George Lombard. While Lombard coached Ellis in 2016 with the Dodgers, only Schumaker has managerial experience in the major leagues.

Ellis has stayed with the Padres after retiring from playing, and in the last five seasons, San Diego has reached the playoffs three times—possibly the best run in franchise history during that time.

After setting a franchise record for most defeats in a single season (121 in 2024), the White Sox are desperate for a rebound. They removed manager Pedro Grifol in the middle of the season and replaced him with interim manager Grady Sizemore.

Will Venable, a former outfielder for the Dodgers, is another name that has surfaced.

While playing with the Texas Rangers in 2023, Venable was an assistant coach under Bruce Bochy.

According to Nelson and Fegen, Chicago has allegedly started notifying candidates who are no longer being considered as part of its managerial search.

Regardless of the person Chicago chooses to fill the position, they will be striving to recover from their historically poor season. The White Sox can only go up from here.
